Two UK hackers jailed

p2p news / p2pnet:- Two British hackers have been jailed after pleading guilty to “unauthorised modification of computers with intent between 31 December 2001 and 7 February 2003,” says the BBC.

The unauthorised mods came about via the T-K Worm which the two had ‘helped’ to create, says the story, going on, “Andrew Harvey, 24, of Sherburn Village, Co Durham, was jailed for three months, and Jordan Bradley, 22, of Darlington, was jailed for six months.”

The BBC says neither Harvey nor Bradley, part of a group called the Threat Krew, had made any money out of their actions.

“The arrests were witnessed by officers from the US Computer and Technology Crime Hi-tech team which flew in from southern California,” adds the BBC.

“unauthorised modification of computers with intent…”

What kind of intent? Does this mean that if amd, intel, mobo makers etc all get together and implement drm in hardware that, i can then file charges and get them arrested for the same thing? I certainly wouldn’t have authorised the addition of drm to hardware i purchased!

Considering how vague the word “modification” is i could probably also charge MS with adding drm to vista and “modifying my computer” by restricting what i can do with it.

Tho i’m sure their EULA will state that if you install or use vista you have given them exactly that authorisation, and a whole lot more.

“What do you mean you didn’t give us permission to delete that non-MS game which is competing with our product? Of course you did, it’s in the EULA! You didn’t read it!? That’s a breach of contract, which is also in the EULA! We’re gonna do you for that now!”
