New Big Music ‘trade’ group

p2p news / p2pnet:- They’re out to get you. Who?

Everyone.

Thanks to the Net and its instant, untrammeled (by vested interests) communications, for the first time in history, ordinary people around the world can, and do, access the only real currency, raw information, which is allowing them to make informed decisions, which in turn means they’re not consuming like good little consumers should.

Obviously, this must to stop and accordingly, the entertainment and software cartels have come up with a way to, “take the fight against the theft of intellectual property to the highest international level”.

What? They’re not doing that already, having already bought and paid for countless politicians and enforcement officers at the highest international levels?

Fourteen captains of industry have “agreed an initial 4-point plan of action and launched a recruitment drive to mobilize other CEOs from different countries and the spectrum of affected industries” under something they’re calling BASCAP (Business Action to Stop Counterfeiting and Piracy), states the International Chamber of Commerce.

That may be what the ICC says. But in reality, two of the four Big Music cartel record labels are actually in charge, and the group’s first meeting was staged (the word is used advisedly) in EMI’s London HQ.

Eric Nicoli, chairman, EMI, UK, and Jean-René Fourtou, chairman of the supervisory board, Vivendi Universal, are the BASCAP co-chairmen, and it’s Fourtou who defines the group’s main agenda:

“To ensure governments now turn words into action and to help them raise awareness among the public of the seriousness of the problem.”

The KKK (Korporate Kummunity Klan) leaders are (above right): Steve Ballmer, ceo, Microsoft; Peter Brabeck-Letmathe, chairman and ceo, Nestlé, Switzerland; Pierre Dufour, deputy ceo, L’Air Liquide, France; Jean-René Fourtou, chairman of the supervisory board, Vivendi Universal, France (and BASCAP co-chair); David Iakobachvili, chairman, Wimm-Bill-Dann Foods, Russia; Sudhir Jalan, vice chairman, SICPA India Ltd; Andrew Conway Gaorekwe Molusi, ceo, Johnnic Communications, South Africa; Eric Nicoli, chairman, EMI, UK (BASCAP co-chair); Yong Sung Park, chairman, Doosan Group, Korea; Tariq M. Rangoonwala, ceo, Home Products International, Pakistan; Andrew Witty, president, Pharmaceuticals Europe, GlaxoSmithKline, UK; Bob Wright, vice chairman and executive officer, General Electric, chairman and ceo NBC Universal, USA.

Their “initial” four-point action plan reads like this:

To create counterfeiting and piracy indices, identifying issues that deserve greater attention within national IP protection programmes;

To develop of a clearinghouse to share best practices and strategies and leverage existing industry efforts;

To compile a compendium of case studies and statistics – the first global, cross-sectoral stocktake of the counterfeiting and piracy problem – which can be shared between businesses and governments;

To develop educational materials for policy makers and the public to explain why IP rights should be respected and enforced.

And it’s left toEMI to sum things up.

“BASCAP is about commanding respect for intellectual property in all its forms, regardless of industry or geography,” according to Nicoli.

“We live in an age where virtually every sector in every country on the planet is contaminated by piracy and counterfeiting and this is having devastating effects on our businesses, the economy and wider society.”

So, all you hundreds of millions of criminal p2p file sharers and pirates, get ready to repel boarders .

    Hello TCPA, bye-bye free speech, fair use, free/open source software.
    With this, they’re also gonna sneak in software patents, effectively killing most Free/Open Source software. If this thing gets passed through internationally, all internet users are f*cked.

    You got that wrong, Sir. We live in an age where virtually every every country on the planet is contaminated by BIG industry intent on stifling innovation and free (as in libre) exchange of ideas all in the name of profit.

    Rest assured, the masses will rise against you as they always have. Reading a history book or two will do a “world” of good, Sir.

    Nice write-up. This little statement is “loaded”… If one thing can be said about the transition from the 20th Century to the 21st Century is this — For the first time in history the people CONTROL the medium (more or less) AND the content, in what is known as the Internet.

    Man, I love the NET! Heck, I only watch an average of about 1/2 to 1 hour of TV, but spend “considerable” time on news sites. Heck, the Internet has Independent websites I KNOW I can trust to give me TRUTHFUL information — TV, Movies, Radio never, NEVER did that!

    Their plan is just what you described. They are also trying for years to “instigate” an International tax, such as taxing at the well-head (Oil & Gas) so that people are “unaware” of such tax.

    This is just one of their many, under-handed sleezy schemes. FORTUNATELY, many, MANY ppl on the net are aware of this!

    Ha, screw you ‘international-bankers’!!!!

    Personally, I’m more concerned about the planet being contaminated by dioxin, acid rain, heavy metals (Like Bismuth and Molybdelium, not Judas Preist and MegaDeath), used disposable baby diapers, polystyrene packaging, used tires, radioactive waste, and pesticides than I am about unauthorized copies of words, music, and code. Shouldn’t you and everyone else (like the members of this mega-cartel) be too?

    I’m similar to you in that I am also concerned about these issues. Same with my “hippie friends”…heck, I don’t even drive, I bike around the city (30-60 miles a day, on average 30 miles) every day! It’s good exercise, saves money, non-polluting, good for the environment — and there’s a bonus.

    For years, I’ve tried to lose my excess fat. Guess what?! Now, I only have a slight ‘double chin’….hahahahh I used to have a double (morphing into a triple) chins!!!!

    All of the ‘important issues’ in life are inter-related, including those who run the RIAA / MPAA. News to some of you, those ppl who run these rackets, ALSO do what you mentioned above. So, either way, by ‘attacking’ them where it hurts most (their pocket books) you deal a blow to corruption…
