mininova Sony PSP promo
p2p news / p2pnet:- Sony is a dues-paying, fully signed up, founding member of both the Big Four record label and Big Seven movie studio cartels.
As such, it’s firmly behind RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) and MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) efforts to stamp out the horror of p2p file sharing.
The RIAA is trying to blackmail its customers into buy its over-priced, cookie-cutter downloads, and the MPAA is similarly (en)forcing the closure of BitTorrent sites.
A mouthperson for the record label cartel’s BPI (British Phonographic Industry) had described “advertising legal music download services on sites that promote illegal file-sharing” as a “sick joke”.
With this in mind, news that the entertainment industry cartels had instructed Apple and Napster to pull advertisements they’d both been sneakily running on p2p file sharing sites wasn’t surprising.
Meanwhile, mininova is selling T-shirts behind a promotion through which potential punters are offered a chance to win a Sony PSP.

All is fair in love and war —- and sales, of course ; P
Stay tuned.

“is this a good thing to post” – you think its a secret?
“is sony knowingly doing this?” – probablyu not but you gotta admit its a good idea hehehe

I know its not a secret but that could cause the site to maybe be shut down by drawing attention by the mpaa and riaa and etc. I just figured keep it as low as possible

Reading this brings to mind something sort of similar I heard of once. Unless this same add is going to other legal sites, there is a chance of this being a sting.
Back in the day, if you will, that Sci-Fi was coming on line for pay for view, they ran an ad. The ad was one of “celebrating” the creation of an all science fiction channel. In that theme you could send in a few bucks and your return address and they would send you a tee shirt with Sci-fi emblazoned all over the front and back.
The catch was that Sci-Fi was under testing. While being on line, it wasn’t open for business. No one with a legal unscrambler could see it. News of its debut was everywhere on the cable and satellite channels. It had been advertised for several months.
Those sending in for the tee shirts instead of getting a tee shirt got a notice to appear in court for piracy and recieving unautorized signal. I guess they appreciated the victims sending in a helping hand in telling them they were recieving the signal and helping to pay for the inital paperwork to get the cases started.

I understand what you mean, but I wouldn’t worry about it.
You can be sure Jedi Dan and his merry men are already well aware of mininova and all other similar sites, large and small.
Cheers!

So, what’s the point of this article?
Yes, we’ve got a T-Shirts promo running on our site, and we’re giving away a PSP. But Sony is not involved at all by this promo. It’s not like they’re paying for the PSP or something.
If you read the promotion page ( http://www.mininova.org/tshirts.php ), you’ll see that the free PSPs are offered by Jinx and Mininova.
But why specifically a Sony PSP? Just because it’s a hot gadget at the moment. Chance is that we’ll switch the promo to a free Xbox360 in a few months.

—So, what’s the point of this article? —
Here’s the point, Niek.
On the one hand the entertainment cartels are getting Apple and Napster to pull their ads from p2p sites, and on the other, a p2p site is in effect advertising a product made by one of the cartel members that’s suing file sharers and closing BT sites,
Cheers!

I tried to make clear that we’re *not* advertising Sonys products, but our own shirts. In this case our promo is occasionally a SCE product, but maybe we choose another cool gadget next time.
