Apple Power Mac G5s

p2p news / p2pnet: Apple says it’s is offering a new line of Power Mac G5s coming in at $2,000, $2,500 and $3,200 and providing quad-core processing with two 2.5 GHz dual-core PowerPC G5 processors, a new PCI Express architecture and graphics options including NVIDIA’s Quadro FX 4500.

“By moving to the dual-core PowerPC chip, a move that’s been anticipated since IBM officially unveiled its dual-core PowerPC 970MP earlier this year, Apple also communicated something else,” says eWeek.

“Despite Apple’s plan to begin moving its computers to Intel Corp.’s x86 chips in 2006, the new systems suggest that PowerPC chips are likely to be around for a while in the Power Mac line and its other products are likely to make the switch first.”

Apple says the Power Mac G5 Quad configuration, clocked at 2.5GHz and featuring two dual-core G5 chips, “can encode standard definition video content in Final Cut Pro 5 up to 60 percent faster than the dual-processor 2.7GHz system that preceded it, for example,” says Macworld.

“Adobe Photoshop runs a series of 45 commonly used filters and actions 43 percent faster on a Quad system; Adobe After Effects ca render video effects up to 69 percent faster, LightWave 3D renders animation up to 59 percent faster and the Bioinformatics Benchmark System (BBS version 3) can complete a comparison of genomic sequences up to 39 percent faster.”
