My advice is to either buy an answering machine and never answer the phone yourself or pretend to work for an answering service. The one i work for uses the following scripts.

<Caller introduces themself and asks how you are>

You say "The person who can assist you is unavailable, may i ask them to return your call?"

<Caller either recognises this as a script and hangs up or doesn't and tries to give you their spiel>

Interrupt them with "I'm taking messages on their behalf and don't have that information. May i ask someone to return your call?"

<Caller either gives up or continues to pester you>

If they don't give up, simply repeat the second phrase until they go away.

DON'T hang up! A real answering service rep cannot do that. Make them hang up on you. Think of it as a game, if you make them hang up on you, they get a small taste of their own medicine and you win! ;o)

There are only so many telemarketing firms out there and if you do this to all of them, you should get on their own "do not call" lists and hopefully see the number of calls you get decline.

Nice article. Question: Are laws not supposed to be applied equally? How can Parliament protect the right to privacy for individuals by putting limits on telemarketers but not on themselves? Congress has done the same thing in the US. It looks like Canadians have to put up with the same kind of politicians that exist with your neighbors to the south. Any recommendations? Don Shee, Downers Grove, IL
