Hong Kong file sharer

p2p news / p2pnet: Apparently, in Hong Kong, “illegal file-sharing had fallen by 80%” since a man who ran a BitTorrent was found guilty of copyright infringement.

That is, of course, pure, unadulterated MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) hog-wash. But it’s being reported as fact by no less than the BBC, which goes on, “BitTorrent is widely used to trade material like TV shows and movies. It makes the sharing of material easy by breaking a file up into fragments and then distributing them.”

In “what is believed to be the first case involving BitTorrent file-sharing software,” Chan Nai-ming was found guilty of distributing elderly Hollywood movies Red Planet, Miss Congeniality and Daredevil.

He now faces up to four years’ jail and a “hefty fine,” adds the Beeb.

Tired of being treated like a criminal? They depend on you, not the other way around. Don’t buy their ‘product’. Do bug your local political representatives. Use emails, snail-mail, phone calls, faxes, IM, stop them in the street, blog. And if you’re into organizing, organize petitions, organize demonstrations and then turn up on your local political rep’s doorstep, making sure you’ve contacted your local tv/radio station/newspaper in advance.
