Google eBay gBay?
p2p news / p2pnet: Google still isn’t officially saying it’s getting into online sales, sticking to, "We are testing new ways for content owners to easily send their content to Google.”
But a demo site appeared briefly, this week, and although a gBay wouldn’t affect eBay’s auction activities – yet – there are other areas, such as direct sales and ‘stores,’ where competition with Google could hurt, especially considering Google is also thinking about its own e-payments system which could conceivably compete with eBay’s PayPal.
And the media are lapping it up.
"The latest chapter in the often-fantastic saga of Google is out," says PC World, "This time, it’s about how Google plans to crush EBay."
CNET News thinks by, "combining search, commerce, community and other features, the new offering had the potential to be something far bigger than a simple online store".
"eBay should be nervous," says PC Pro. "At first sight it would seem that Google is merely allowing people to post details of absolutely anything (hence the proteins) and developing some kind of tagging system which would give another kick to its already huge index. However, it doesn’t take much of a leap to see how the user postings might become offers for sale."
Moreover, significant numbers of eBay sellers are extremely unhappy with the company’s careless attitude towards the people who keep it fat and happy and it’s a good bet that if they had somewhere else to go, they’d go, and in their hundreds of thousands.
Stay tuned.
