You realize that by disabling autorun on your CD drive and just ripping with Exact Audio Copy to FLAC, you can keep all your CDs losslessly archived at about half the size. FLAC is similar to a realtime implementation of zip or rar. When you want to encode for your ipod or your mp3 player, all you have to do is run the flac decoder to convert your files back to wave or aiff and encode. It takes slightly longer than installing the stupid wma crap, but it leaves you with perfect lossless copies on your computer with full flexibility. All tools listed are either open source or freeware.

All of the codecs listed (LAME, FLAC, and FAAC (mp3, flac, and aac)) are all available as binaries from http://rarewares.org.

Exact Audio Copy is freeware. Several versions are available, but 0.9 beta 4 is still the most reliable. 0.9 beta 4 is available at http://www.ubernet.org/?p=UberTools , but the latest version is available at http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/ Note: the latest version is unstable. iTunes is available at http://www.apple.com .

The previous message was mine, but I wasn't logged in.

Please send letters about this issue to your elected representative. Canadians should write to the Competition Bureau.

http://www.competitionbureau.gc.ca/

I wrote the following to the Industry Minister, Industry critics and my MP this morning:

I sent the following message to the Competition Bureau this morning. As this affects Bill C-60 I believe it is appropriate for the Industry Minister and Industry critics to be aware of this important issue.

Summary: So-called "copy control" and DRM are issues of contract law, not copyright law. This is the jurisdiction of the provinces, not the federal government. These technologically encoded contracts, also known as "paracopyright", are hidden from consumers, and must be made transparent and accountable as with other contract formats. The Competition Bureau should be intervening in Bill C-60 to ensure that "paracopyright" is not inappropriately protected in Canadian Copyright law.

I would like to add that Bill C-60 should be amended to remove protection for "paracopyright" being added to Copyright, but that the ability to adequately scrutinize "paracopyright" be added to the Competition Act and PIPEDA.

My contact information:

Russell McOrmond
...

I then included a copy of the letter at: http://www.digital-copyright.ca/discuss/5863

You forgot to include this: That in their battle with Apple they are promoting Microsoft. Microsoft has their DRM which mandates the use of Microsoft players, and Apple has their DRM which mandates the use of Apple players. Microsoft has a monopoly on the desktop (proven in court -- there is no debate here), and Apple is growing a monopoly on portable audio players (not yet a monopoly, not in any court).

Can you see the difference? I'm not (nor ever will be) a customer of either Microsoft or Apple, and if I were to be sending a letter to anyone it would be to say that all music services should be untied from any players.

It maybe worse than you think. Check out http://www.sysinternals.com/blog/2005/10/sony-rootkits-and-digital-rights.html where they describe the rootkit that Sony's latest DRM scheme installs. It hijacks system calls, changes operating system routines to hide the software, and is essentially non-removable by the average user.

I recently went through the same bizarre experience with the new Foo Fighters disc. I gave up much sooner than you did. I buy CD's to rip them and then throw them in the basement. I want bands to get paid so they will make the next CD. After getting stung by Sony, I also removed all Sony from my HDTV list. I couldn't find a Sony feedback so I used the Apple one to announce how much business Sony would lose.
And now I read your article and find out that is has nothing to do with getting the bands paid. Its just so Sony can extort Apple. I am now going retail with my complaints. I am going to make sure 9 people never buy Sony again.

Those instructions are crap because WMA -> MP3/MP4/AAC conversion sucks. Install Linux and rip with something on that, or use a Mac. Fuck WMA always.
