SunnComm spoof: reactions
p2p news view / p2pnet: I was really amazed by some of the reactions to my SunnComm spoof.
I wrote it because I figured snake-oil sales firms (SunnComm and close associate Macrovision of RipGuard fame, in this instance) and the companies which keep them in funds are fair game.
Verbal and pictorial lampoons have for centuries been used to focus the public eye on matters of public import and the idea was to draw further attention to the ridiculous concept that Digital Restrictions Management can work by an equally ridiculous (I thought ; ) post.
It’s really easy. If you can see it and/or hear it, you can copy it and DRM is dangerous only to the companies that use it. Ask Sony BMG.
I had several emails which, from their tone, I have to assume came from not disinterested observers. A couple of the comment posts were interesting too.
But I was totally blown away by the fact the company issued a full-scale public denial.
How I could have made it more obvious that my piece was a take-off? I mean, Apple ear buds pumping out screams at 250 decibels? As one comment post said, that would liquefy your head. Computers carrying live electrical charges thanks to Microsoft software? Come on. And the comment I attributed to Microsoft’s Bill Gates was a straight lift from smarmy Apple promo blurb that’s always at the bottom of its puff releases.
But I guess the reaction is further proof, if it were needed, that the cartels who use DRM, and the companies that make it, are as low as whale-shit and thick as two short planks.
They need YOU. You don’t need them.
In the meanwhile, a statement from the White House says SunnComm ceo Peter Jacobs has been appointed Special DRM Advisor to George W. Bush.
Stay tuned.

Tired of being treated like a criminal? They depend on you, not the other way around. Don’t buy their ‘product’. Do bug your local political representatives. Use emails, snail-mail, phone calls, faxes, IM, stop them in the street, blog. And if you’re into organizing, organize petitions, organize demonstrations and then turn up on your local political rep’s doorstep, making sure you’ve contacted your local tv/radio station/newspaper in advance.
