New Sober worm shows up
p2p news / p2pnet: Police authorities in Bavaria, Germany, yesterday warned a new Sober e-worm outbreak was on its way.
They’d based their prediction on their year-long investigation into the Sober case, and they were right, says F-Secure.
Unfortunately, "They also say they can not provide more details at this time (’Nähere Einzelheiten können zum jetzigen Zeitpunkt noch nicht mitgeteilt werden’)," says the blog.
The Sober variant should spread in emails looking like this, said the police warning:
Subject: Registration Confirmation
Body: Thanks for your registration. Your data are saved in the zipped Word.doc file!
Attachment: registration.zip
Now, "Three Sober variants have been found over last four hours," says F-Secure.
"One of them (detected by us as Email-Worm.Win32.Sober.v) matches the description predicted yesterday by the Bavarian police."

With the stuff Sony has come up with, worm writing may actually become a respectable occupation.

It never ceases to amaze me that there are still ppl out there who open attachments of emails from ppl they don’t know. In spite of all the publicity viruses and malware gets. In spite of all the antivirus products available. There are still ppl out there who open attachments from unknown sources and get their pc’s infected, which then become part of the bot armies out there.
I say we all lobby our govts to make it a criminal offence, related to criminal negligence, to open emails from ppl you don’t know, without having up to date antivirus and firewall software running. There is simply no excuse any more. Being a moron doesn’t count either!
