Top Finland movie online

p2p news / p2pnet: Further proof, if it were needed, of the power of the Net comes from new Number One movie in Finland.

Harry Potter? Nope. Walk the Line, then? Or Chicken Little?

Nope. The movie that’s pulling is Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning, a Star Trek spoof. And its popularity is all down to the fact it’s available online.

There are versions with English and Swedish subtitles. And another comes in Klingon, although the latter wasn’t the work of the people who produced the epic ;D

Finnish Internet hosting company Magenta Sites is helping to distribute SWITP and it says 2.948.462 (plus one ; ) copies have so far been downloaded since October 1.

“This takes the film past the ‘Unknown Soldier’ (Tuntematon Sotilas) to the number 1 all-time spot of Finnish movies,” says Magenta. “Tuntematon Sotilas gathered approximately 2.8 million viewers in its several decades long history.”

So much for Hollywood’s multi-million-dollar crap epics, and so much for antiquated distribution methods. It’s the 21st digital century and p2p Rulz. Or as Reuters puts it, “The success of Star Wreck comes as the film industry grapples with the threats and opportunities of the Internet.

“Movie studios are fearful of the rampant piracy that has ravaged their music label counterparts but are also hoping to use the Internet to cut distribution costs and open up new markets.”

Magenta calls SWITP “a groundbraking case in the history of legal online film distribution,” going on that it estimates the total number of downloads is already past the 3.5 million mark (probably closer to 4.0 million) including mirrored sites, BitTorrent downloads and other means of distribution.

“Our original estimate of the data amounts rising into the rarely seen PetaByte range was no joke either. The film distribution from Magenta has currently exceeded 2 PetaBytes in the amount of transferred data, and still keeps on going strong.”

And speaking of BT, not at all incidentally, yesterday, Hollywood wheeled BtTorrent creator Bram Cohen out alongside MPAA boss Dan ‘Jedi’ Glickman in an anti-p2p dog-and-pony show which further demonstrates the growing power and enormous potential of p2p file sharing.

Meanwhile, for people who for some reason or another don’t use BT, or if they don’t know if they have XviD codec installed, there’s even a WMV version.

In addition to the Abobe subtitles, there are Czech, French, German, Hungarian, Japanese, Spanish (and, of course, Klingon) fansubs online.

If you haven’t seen this spoof, do. It is on par with anything Hollydud puts out. Better it is free. It shows that you don’t have to have tons of bucks to throw at making a movie to get a movie.

My hats off to the makers of this one. It was excellently done.

Kudus for the speed of the download from the original site also. If you have good broadband you can be watching it in less than a 1/2 hour. Try it, you’ll like it.

While I really dislike so called space spoof type movies, I was really impressed with the graphics, special effects, and set design. Hollydud had better look out! The independents are improving, and Hollydud will soon be forced to compete. I believe that the media cartel fears downloading and peer to peer precisely because of independent work. Independent creators do not have to cater to the petty peeves of spoiled actors. They do not have to prop up the lavish lifesyles of producers, execurtives, and others who take their cut from the top.

The last Hollydud movie I saw was War of the Worlds (It was OK, but not worth the $7 to see in the movies), and the only reason I watched it was because my brother brought it over, and it had Dakota Fanning in it. I believe that the effects in Star Wreck were just as good if not superior to that of War of the Worlds. Yup, Hollydud, be afraid, be VERY AFRAID.
