Higgy’s SoundNet
p2p news feature / p2pnet: Tom Higginson over in England is a good guy. A Shareaza contributor, he wrote the script for p2pnet’s mobile hook-up.
And he’s also launched his own music site, SoundNet.
“Filesharing has this problem that although many developers don’t intend the technology to be used for infringement, often the users have other ideas, and so a lot of people are getting into trouble over its use,” he says >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Free file hosting for musicians
By Tom ‘Higgy’ Higginson - SoundNet
About three years ago I had the idea of creating a website where music can be freely traded on filesharing networks because the musicians themselves give their permission for this free trade to happen, a concept which is greatly helped by the existence of Creative Commons.
At the time I didn’t have the skills to create such a site but after a couple of previous attempts I have managed to produce SoundNet.
SoundNet provides artists with free hosting for music, pictures, videos and other files, selecting a license when the file is uploaded to the site.
Distribution is then done using filesharing networks, such as Gnutella, using a set of specially written tools to help with the initial distribution of the files on the major filesharing networks.
All that is required to download from the site is a filesharing client such as Shareaza or Frostwire, which many people already have.
The idea is that by using filesharing technology we can reduce the bandwidth required to host the files on SoundNet.
Eventually the files need not be hosted on the site at all.
The site is currently in early stages and although most features are complete, there may still be some problems, errors and omissions. If anyone is able to provide some assistance, especially where the legal side of things is concerned, please get in touch.
Tired of being treated like a criminal? They depend on you, not the other way around. Don’t buy their ‘product’. Do bug your local political representatives. Use emails, snail-mail, phone calls, faxes, IM, stop them in the street, blog. And if you’re into organizing, organize petitions, organize demonstrations and then turn up on your local political rep’s doorstep, making sure you’ve contacted your local tv/radio station/newspaper in advance.

I truly believe this is one of the brightest ideas since sliced bread. From what I heard this morning on one of the “Face the Nation”-type programs, a very well-known musician was absolutely robbed by his recording company. He couldn’t even sing his own songs - he didn’t own the rights.
More ideas like this one should do wonders for p2p and the artists who have gone broke from their contracts with the “Big Guys.” And I wholeheartedly agree with someone who said that if an artist is worrying about someone downloading their music, they should be more worried if they weren’t. So true.
Good luck and God bless with this new adventure.
