Sony PS3 gets parental control
p2p news / p2pnet: Sony’s new PlayStation 3 will follow a trend already set by Microsoft and Nintendo
In other words, it’ll feature parental control, says the Entertainment Software Association, quoted in the Seattle Times, going on:
“That will mean all three major video-game console makers are promising parents help in restricting children’s access to violent video games.”
It’s a “a disappointment to kids worldwide,” says GeekCoffee.
“The video game industry has been under tougher scrutiny in recent years as lawmakers enacted legislation restricting sales of violent video games to minors,” says the story. “Industry groups have so far successfully challenged the laws in court, citing violations of the First Amendment.”
It has ESA president Doug Lowenstein praising commended Sony, et al, “for voluntarily applying parental control technology that is not yet found in other media devices, such as DVD or music players”.

So parents who have previously shown a complete lack of concern and disinterest in the video-game playing habits of their children are going to be helped by a piece of technology they will have to enable and monitor?
If a child receives a Ps3 or new Xbox or whatever and they set up the parental control, how is that going to make a difference?
It won’t.

I suspect that in 99% of the cases, you are right that the parents won’t know that there is one or won’t care.
But this is just one more way to put blame on the parents for their children going and shooting up schools…. Imagine parents having to *gasp* be parents and monitor their kid’s activities
