iMesh hard-sell?
p2p news / p2pnet: iMesh and Mashboxx are the two most prominent corporate ‘p2p’ apps, but only iMesh is actually online.
Mashboxx was supposed to have appeared in beta in November. But it didn’t happen.
Could it be that Andy Lack, ceo of Sony BMG Music who’s also one of the people principally behind Mashboxx, is trying to keep the latter clear of the terrible press Sony is getting via its rootkit spyware DRM debacle?
Probably. But it won’t make a serious difference to anything if and when it does show up.
Meanwhile, iMesh may be operational but it’s said to be looking for money to keep it going and also appears to be resorting to hard-sell tactics to get people to use it.
“On Monday I had the strangest experience,” writes a p2pnet reader who’s also an iMesh user. “I opened iMesh to play around with it a little (the technology just doesn’t work), and was prompted to upgrade my VIP subscription for $1.
“Here’s the catch: you get 30 days for the $1, then you pay a year’s fee at $6.95 a month as opposed to $8.95. The typical Yahoo thing.
“I hit No on the screen and then was confronted by another screen with a list of reasons for me to check as to why I don’t want to subscribe.
“I hit ‘other’ and submitted. Then I’m hit with a java pop up screen of a chat room with a live person on the other end asking me what I didn’t like about iMesh.
“She then started a high pressure sales pitch.
“I told her I didn’t like imesh because it sucks and wanted to try something else.
“She didn’t like that at all and responded ‘like Grokster?’
“I’ve never been confronted with anything like that before. Besides it being what looks like a desperate move, it was incredibly invasive.
“It was just bizarre.”
Stay tuned.

I have just downloaded the latest version of imesh and when i started to install displayed was that i could use the version free for 30 days and then aborted the installation. I then found this link via google and after reading your posted comments i will not install the software.
