p2p news / p2pnet: News of the Sony BMG debacle has travelled far and wide – but not in Japan, says p2pnet reader Maeko.
“I’m a Japanese consumer who live in Japan,” she says in an email. “I regret to inform you of distrust of mass media in my country. Mass media in my country have never been reported any information about it in detail.”
Japanese consumers don’t have much going for them in the way of protection against the kind of stunt Sony BMG tried to pull with its First 4 Internet rootkit DRM spyware hidden on music CDs, and then the SunnComm MediaMax DRM, which opens people who buy one or more of 140 Sony BMG CDs to hack attacks, Maeko says.
She quotes Dan Kaminsky as saying, “Japan is apparently most injured nation from Sony’s inappropriate DRM all over the world”.
Wired News has Kaminsky saying more than half a million networks, including military and government sites, were probably infected by copy-restriction software distributed by Sony on a handful of its CDs, according to a statistical analysis of domain servers.
“Kaminsky asked more than 3 million DNS servers across the net whether they knew the addresses associated with the Sony rootkit - connected.sonymusic.com, updates.xcp-aurora.com and license.suncom2.com,” says Wired. “He uses a ‘non-recursive DNS query’ that allows him to peek into a server’s cache and find out if anyone else has asked that particular machine for those addresses recently.
“If the DNS server said yes, it had a cached copy of the address, which means that at least one of its client computers had used it to look up Sony’s digital-rights-management site. If the DNS server said no, then Kaminsky knew for sure that no Sony-compromised machines existed behind it.
“The results have surprised Kaminsky himself: 568,200 DNS servers knew about the Sony addresses. With no other reason for people to visit them, that points to one or more computers behind those DNS servers that are Sony-compromised. That’s one in six DNS servers, across a statistical sampling of a third of the 9 million DNS servers Kaminsky estimates are on the net.
“The damage spans 165 countries, with the top five countries being Spain, the Netherlands, Great Britain, the United States and Japan, which, with more than 217,000 DNS servers reporting knowledge of Sony-related addresses, takes the top spot.”
However, Maeko says computer users in Japan are, for the most part, unaware of this, and that’s because mainstream media reports on the scandal are few and far between.
She asks anyone who knows of any news stories, or has any information, about the Sony BMG DRM, as it pertains to Japan, to do a comment post.

Sony is big on payola for music on radio and movies on the press.
Payola is a two way street. Media is paid to help Sony and to be silent about Sony, and if not, payola stops.

If Maeko really wants the Japanese people to become aware of just what Sony has done, without her having to go through the media, her best bet will be to post it all over the famous ‘2 channel’ BBS. True there is a lot of junk on there, but I’m sure if she posts some links to articles in Japanese for the ‘2 channel’ users to read, that the story will grow.
‘2 channel’ is famous in Japan for giving birth to a very successful book/movie “Densha otoko” (train man), where a nerd saves a beautiful woman from molestation on a train, and the nerd eventually starts dating the woman he saved. It’s supposed to be from a true story.
Anyways, ‘2 channel’ is a really good way to get things out into the open because the bbs isn’t owned by any major companies, thus the wide range of subjects and opinions. Although the media itself doesn’t think too highly of ‘2 channel’, there have been several stories that have been highly publicized, only after they were widely discussed on the bbs. There was one not too long ago about one of the record companies copying an ascii character cat for a song video.

There’s been precious little in the UK as well in the mainstream media.
And Amazon UK are still selling XCP infected titles with no sign of any refund or return process.
And you can still buy Mediamax infected titles here with no sign of an upgrade or uninstall process.
The DNS search shows that this is a world problem not just a USA problem. It’s great that the EFF are going after them and making this public, but it’s also a shame the EFF and others can’t make it more global in scope.

Hi. I’m taraco 2-Channel BBS user and admin of “Sony’s malware CD Wiki”. Another 2-Channel user had build a website with translate oversea’s report about sony’s scandal.
She who e-mailed to you is right. Mainstream mass media has not reported sony’s scandal. But many heavy PC user including 2-Channel BBS user had knwon sony’s rootkit. And 2-Channel uers angry with mass media about they had not reported this scandal. I don’t know why mass media has not reoprted it.

Japaneese Sony investors must be worried more about the value of Sony stocks. The rootkit DRM spyware hidden on music CDs’ only worsens matters.
