SpyAxe and Win32.Zlob

p2p news / p2pnet: "Stefan has spent a considerable amount of time lately here in the Anti-Spyware lab looking into SpyAxe," says F-Secure.

"Downloaded and installed by Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Zlob, SpyAxe is nice enough to detect the Trojan that downloads it, but it won’t disinfect it unless you pay for a SpyAxe license, $49.50 U.S. (plus a nonimal $2.95 transaction fee)."

Hmmmmmmm

Not only but also, "there seems to have recently been a huge spike in the distribution of Zlob," says the blog, going on that F-Secure discovered that initially, "there seemed to be about 1,000 new infections per hour".

But now the "US is waking up & powering on their computers, that number has risen to about 2,500 infections per hour.

"I’d guess that we can expect to see many more variants to come."

Could we get a “Morons Who Are Too Stupid To Install Antivirus Software And Keep It Updated” hunting season started? No size/age/number limits and running all year round?

Please? Pretty please? With a cherry on top?

I’ve just come to the conclusion that killing these ppl will be the only way to get their attention. It’s not like there hasn’t been warnings about viruses etc in even the lamest lamescream media outlets at least once a year for the last decade or so.

They’re obviously just not listening or are just too damned stupid to figure it out. “What’s a antivirus software?” “Oh them things never work, i used one and i still got sick!”

I disagree, it’s not the users fault, it’s the OS. Windows allows anything to run as administrator, which leads to modification of startup registry entries, stubs written in exe entry point routines, and injection techniques.

An anti-virus can only detect common viruses that are known about already, it’s not flawless. I could write a virus for your computer and your anti-virus wouldn’t have a clue what it is. You would be blissfully unaware. So don’t assume because you have an anti-virus installed you are safe.

I like the analogy of a sinking boat where the holes are being plugged. That’s how i view windows. The OS is extremely weak on security, and i’m not just talking about buffer overflow exploits.

It’s the OS’s responsibility to provide secure environment. Windows fails to do this in every possible way, instead users have purchase superflous software to plug the gaps in windows.

The answer? simple, it’s called linux. I don’t use anti-viruses/anti-spyware/software firewalls, or any other cpu eating bloated software. Linux allows you to run a secure shell with each user having his/her own data. To perform any system operations, like installing software or adding startup scripts, you must log in as root. This is called a hostile OS, because viruses and intruders simply can’t get access to any critical part of the system.

Conclusions? don’t blame the users, blame the poor OS software which provides a insufficient security model. If users want a secure OS where viruses simpy can’t propagate, then i suggest they try linux.

Don’t be too hard on the people who can’t manage to stop opening the million email attachments they get a day or clicking on every dirty link they see (and then denying it afterwards). They are an important and frequent source of revenue for the neighborhood computer repair man :)

I tried this on a friend’s computer and it worked. Putting his PC into Safe mode was the only tricky part. Even if you are not particularly techy, you can do this. I have fuond a few sites stating that this fix did not work for them.

Spybot now detects and attempts to clean (failed in my friend’s case)
Adaware also detects and also fails to clean.
However, Spybot does vaccinate against this exploit.

Spyaxe have a very cleaver legal protection. We should lobby American Express, VISA, Mastercard, et. al. to deny payment to this fraudulent company.
