The market for automotive audio just isn't that big. People only buy cars every few years and they might change the audio maybe once, maybe never. It is a solid market, but it will never grow. Even a successful company like Alpine is no where near the size and profile of Apple.

I have also desired a car stereo with a built in slot for iPod, but Apple just doesn't gain a lot by investing in this area. Apple is better off partnering with auto manufacturers or auto audio manufacturers like they are doing now. Apple should stick to selling iPods without getting mired in a small market.

I use my iPod in the car, with an FM transmitter. But having a built-in iPod is a dumb idea. The iPod is all about packaging and interface design. Make it a built-in in-dash system, and there's no reason for it to be an iPod. I don't really care what type or brand of stereo is in my dash, as long as I can play my tunes with good sound quality. What I want is a built-in hard-drive MP3 player with a WiFi wireless interface that connects to my home computer wireless router when I'm parked in my garage, and an interface that lets me easily select playlists in the car.
