European hacker conference

p2p news / p2pnet: Nicholas Bentley has an abiding interest in intellectual property issues so it’s no surprise to learn he’ll be at the 22nd Chaos Communication Congress (22C3) – ‘Private Investigations‘ – a four day European hacker conference on technology, society and Utopia in Berlin between December 27 and 30.

“The Congress offers lectures and workshops on a multitude of topics including (but not limited to) information technology, IT-security, internet, cryptography and generally a critical-creative attitude towards technology and the discussion about the effects of technological advances on society,” says the site.

Bentley will be presenting a paper and here, he gives p2pnet readers a brief rundown on the event >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Strong views on IP and copyright
Nicholas BentleyINDICARE

I’ve been asked a few times, “Why am I presenting a paper on intellectual property at the ‘European Hacker Conference’?”

A good question, but it appears to me, though, that I’ll probably be talking to a group that has strong views on IP and copyright, especially when it comes to software, and I imagine some of them will also have a good understanding of the issues involved in implementing a distributed rights registration system on the Internet.

Thus, it seemed a good opportunity to test some of my ideas and hopefully get some direct feedback.

Apart from that there appeared to be many other events going on. Here’s just a selection:

Joi Ito will be giving the Keynote Speech.

David Göthberg will be presenting ‘Peer-to-peer under the hood’, an in-depth look at p2p algorithmics: “This talk is about p2p-algorithms for fully distributed, totally server-less, fully scalable, globally searchable, robust, efficient peer-to-peer systems.”

Jacob Appelbaum talks of ‘Personal experiences bringing technology and new media to disaster areas’ – ‘Experiences from Iraq and post Katrina New Orleans’

“A discussion about technology, culture, the Creative Commons and the media with regards to disaster areas and war zones.”

More reasons for going if you’re within reach. From the site:

Hackcenter
The Hackcenter is a big area at the Congress where you can be present with your own hardware. We provide the infrastructure for networking and to connect to the Internet. We want to stress the point that the Hackcenter is more of an experimental laboratory bot is not the place for LAN parties.

If you want to present your project at the Hackcenter – alone or with your group – you have to apply for space first as the available room is limited, the demand is high and do a selection among the applicants. Plese use the Hackcenter registration page to provide information on you and your project. Use the 22C3 Wiki to find other groups that might do similar things to join forces.

Art & Beauty
“You can create art and beauty with a computer”. This is the motto of Art & Beauty, a special area in the heart of the Congress. Art & Beauty attracts the artistic and creative scene. Art & Beauty is workshop, installation and happening at the same time – at a single place.

And not least, The ‘Haecksen‘ are a group of women and girls in the CCC (and associated groups) who, “This year we moved forward in ‘back-space’ A08. We would like to welcome all women interested. If you are female we would like to see you at 10 in the early morning to have the first fresh coffee of the day.”

p2pnet will be talking to Bentley after the event.

Stay tuned.
