Fake MSN Messenger 8 beta

p2p news / p2pnet: If you come across an alleged working beta of MSN Messenger 8, don’t go near it it’s a virus.

“Messenger 8 BETA has been leaked!” says the fake M8 site.

“So, being the generous person I am, I’ve posted it here for you to download.

“There are many new features within MSN Messenger 8 which were held off from 7, including:

»Skins (Microsoft supported)
»Real-time Emoticons
»Built-in functionality with Windows Media Player 10
»Ability to pause/resume file transfers
»Animated Display Pictures
»Faster Contact List loading and scrolling
»Offline Voice/Message Machine
»Display Picture Ratings, New Hotmail and MSN Messenger integration
»Top 10 Music Radio
»Local top news items
»And way, way more! :)

But, “If you download and run BETA8WEBINSTALL.EXE from that site, you won’t get a new chat client,” says F-Secure.

“Instead, your existing MSN Messenger will start to send download links to everyone in your contact list. It also connects your machine to a botnet server.”

p2pnet admin, would you remove the fake m8 site link from the article, or at least make it unclickable, you never know how stupid some people can be.

  2. Reader's Write Says:

I doubt if anyone would be that dumb. But since you’ve raised the point, I’ve deleted the link. I guess researchers and anyone else who’s interested will be able to find it without my help : )

    Cheers!

Those message services I gave up on long ago. There’s too many crack pots, too many that want to give you something for free, and far too much spyware/malware going around.

I sort of agree with the initial poster on the link. While this one is a virus, the next one might be a spoof and the quick thinking malware writer may well have something set up just for you. Sort of a matter of timing.

Most malware writers still have the problem of how to get it installed on your computer. Writing for the psycological trigger that makes you want it is almost like an advertising campaign. It’s all in the wording. Look at a gift horse long and hard before you decide its a real horse.

The problem I have with this fake msn, is that I did a very stupid thing. I downloaded the “FREE VERSION of Limewire”

In essence, I needed a few good songs to listen to when busy. But, the stub installer, that I deleted of course, has it baked into my computer…msn 8…mother*******

In anycase, I need some help restoring my task manager, it wont run, and I need to delete all of the files associated with msn 8 beta…FAKE msn 8 bets…rawr…

If possible email me at Immortal.Horizons@yahoo.com, merely my buisiness email…therefore it won’t be cluttered with mail from raunchy teens who love my music…

heh, you guys get spam too.. I had to install a bayesian filter on another site of mine – it was getting as much spam as comments! the filter only ever got two false positives – both were some guy whining about something in broken english.
