iPod man gets UK honour
p2p news / p2pnet: iPod designer Jonathan Ive, a Londoner and Apple’s senior vp of design, was gonged during Queen Elizabeth’s New Years Honours list.
That means he’s now a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for his services to industry.
He hasn’t done much for Britain, mind you. But then again Queen Elizabeth, one of the wealthiest women in the world, also gave Bill Gates an honourary knighthood.
“Ives studied design and art at Newcastle Polytechnic in England,” says Reuters. “In 1989, he became a partner at Tangerine, a London-based design consultant where he worked on products ranging from power tools to wash basins. He joined Apple in 1992 and became the leader of the company’s design team in 1996.”
A CBE is the third most senior among the five British classes of chivalry, created in 1917 by King George V to honour noncombatants at the height of World War I. Being awarded a CBE once used to mean something but now they’re dished out to almost anyone, just like knighthoods.
