Allpeers: Firefox file sharing?

p2p news / p2pnet: Allpeers says it’s the best thing to happen to Firefox since Firefox.

Nice PR hook : ) But is that the reality?

AllPeers 2.0 is a free p2p file sharing extention which, "combines the strength of Firefox and the efficiency of BitTorrent to transform your favorite browser into a media sharing powerhouse".

Based on Firefox, it’s explicitly designed to, "assist in the creation of so-called Web 2.0 applications: software that exploits new trends such as social networking, self-publishing and client-centric computing," says the company.

Moreover, "You decide which media files you want to share with whom and to maximise your privacy" and "communications are encrypted".

AllPeers Ltd is a UK private company founded by an Anglo-French team comprising Cedric Maloux (France), the former European vp of PlanetOut, and Matthew Gertner (Britain), the former ceo of Schemantix who’s now the company cto. And to make the enterprise truly international, the Allpeers development centre is based in Prague.

Maloux told p2pnet Allpeers will be shortly released as open-source and meanwhile, "we’ll also be releasing our own end-user application built on top of the AllPeers platform," he says.

Given that Allpeers says it’ll be "deploying new services on AllPeers, some of which will require payment," we wondered which, when and how much?

"The service is and will remain free for sharing files in a private group," promised Maloux. "Later, added-value services will be introduced. It’s like Skype: the VOIP service is free but SkypeOut, SkypeIn are not."

Does that mean users can expect ads soon to be blotting the landscape? Definitely not, Maloux told p2pnet, "there will be no advertising (banners or contextual text links or whatever) in the software."

And what does Mozilla have to say about things, Allpeers being a confessed file sharing application with all that implies?

Maloux would say only he’s talking to "people" but couldn’t "comment on our involvement with Mozilla at this stage".

Go here to check out the pre-release blurb. You’ll need to leave an email addie if you want to know when AllPeers goes live but, "We will not spam you or sell your email address to spammers," declares the site. "Never. Ever. Period."

“We will not spam you or sell your email address to spammers,” but we will give your e-mail addy to the RIAA/MPAA if the courts order us to… ;-)

Actually sound interesting. I’ll watch this one (but I won’t send them my e-mail address…).

This does sound pretty interesting. Hopefully the transfer rates won’t be limited, unlike Skype’s.

i work hard at it, thanks. :)

elitists have to buy a suntan, lazy SOB’s. ;) LOL

btw, i’ve looked at the links to this proggie and so far it just looks like a lot of madison avenue hype without any beta downloads yet. until i try a full version, i’ll reserve any comment. i never try beta releases. too much to worry about.

it sort of sounds like WWWFileshare which i’ve used and found very easy…so this might be good.

    as jon says…”stay tuned”.
