XBox 360 to get HD-DVD drive

p2p news / p2pnet: Bill; and the Boyz say they’re going to add an external HD-DVD drive as an accessory for their Xbox 360, say reports.

It’ll allow Xbox 360 owners to play HD DVD movies

Philips BenQ Digital Storage,a joint venture between BenQ and Royal Philips Electronics, "has obtained OEM orders for DVD-ROM drive modules to be used in Microsoft’s Xbox 360 with shipments to begin this month, according to industry sources," says DigiTimes, adding:

"BenQ, however, declined to comment on the report, citing customer confidentiality."

Man instead of making removable faceplates they should have designed the thing with an easily removable drive…

    vert short sighted!!!

I said to many people upon the 360’s release that they would screw people into getting the hddvd drive as an add-on. That is a terrible move since customers know that the games don’t need that drive. Why would anyone buy a drive like that that can’t play blu-ray as well? It makes sense if it’s built into the console like the PS3 should be. Otherwise, I would opt for a standard player that supports both formats. If MS makes some games HDDVD only, there will be many mad customers.
