Google Talk, Local, on Blackberry
p2p news / p2pnet: The phrase KISS – Keep It Simple, Stupid – might almost have been chosen by Research In Motion (RIM), maker of the famed Blackberry.
Keeping the design straight forward and efficient, "allowed RIM engineers to outmanoeuvre bigger rivals, such as Motorola Inc., which were working on their own wireless e-mail devices," says the Globe & Mail..
"Even today, RIM devices lack cameras and digital music players, key features of rival products such as Palm Inc.’s Treo."
But another phrase might also be applied: Evolve or die. And now RIM says it’s has struck a deal with Google meaning Google Talk instant messaging and Google Local for mobile will run on BlackBerriess.
Google Talk is scheduled to arrive in the Spring while Google Local for mobiles is available now, says RIM. Both applications will be free, "subject to any data service rates applicable for downloading and using the applications with a limited data plan," i adds.
The partnerships are, "an indication that Waterloo, Canada-based RIM is continuing to move ahead despite legal troubles that have, for several months, threatened to shut down its e-mail service entirely," says the San Jose Merucury News. "More than 3 million people are estimated to be using BlackBerrys in the United States.
"It’s also a signal that Google, the Mountain View-based Web search giant, is increasingly spreading its brand and products beyond the Web. Last week, Google jumped into mainstream television, offering current and old CBS shows for sale through its Google Video Web site."
