Mininova celebration
p2p news / p2pnet: Mininova is one of the top torrent sites. So you’d think that means it’s been around for ever.
But Nope. Niek tells us the site is only a year old today. So, Happy birthday, guys, and many returns! : )
Mininova is as popular as it is because obviously, it’s something people want. Now, all we need is for the entertaimment and software industries to get it ito their heads that mininova and sites like it are friends, not enemies.

About a year ago, I started working on a website that would replace SuprNova, a very popular BitTorrent site that cancelled its services in December 2004. Shortly after I started, my friends Erik, Jos, Matthijs en Rob joined the mininova staff.
Who could ever have thought that 1 year later, this website would be the number 1 place for millions of people worldwide to get torrents off?
What was the reason for mininova’s huge growth?
- Was it the simple layout?
- The perfect timing after SuprNovas shutdown?
- The many revolutionary and advanced features?
- The forum with its great community?
The only thing I know for sure is that we’ll stay here with you, the BitTorrent users 
Of couse I’d like to say thanks to everybody who helped us (the staff) accomplish what we’ve got now:
- You, the users! For getting fresh torrents from mininova every day!
- All our moderators, at the forum and the site. Their work is probably invisible for you, but they accomplish huge things. Without them, mininova would be a mess…

I’d like to emphasise that we’ve just started, and we’ve got a long way to go! I’m sure many interesting and important things will happen this year.
As usual, we’d like to know what you, as a BitTorrent user, would like to see changed on mininova. Please share your ideas by posting a comment in this blog.
Personally, I was thinking that a new design for mininova would be a good idea (the current layout is getting quite old). Having said that: if you’re working for a webdesign company and you’re interested in a nice offer, feel free to contact me.

but please don’t change the design and layout. it’s perfect the way it is now – simple and easy to use.

A few comments are in order though:
It’s difficult, sometimes, to tell language or format of the torrent. I spent a few days downloading “Robin Hood: Men it Tights” DVD image about 4 gigs. I was disappointed to discover that it’s main language was German and it was in PAL format. As I don’t understand German and I live in Canada, it took me a week before I was able to enjoy the movie with my wife. It might be useful to have a way fto enter the language and format into the torrent rather than relying on the poster to supply it in the description.
I think those are my biggest gripes, otherwise, great site!
