Just the quick good news this morning.

http://www.digital-copyright.ca/node/1851

We have quite a few new MPs to be speaking with, and we'll be setting up a new letter to introduce ourselves to the new MPs. We need to make sure they know we are here, and know who to talk to when a new copyright bill is brought forward.

Who knows -- the Conservatives could repeal the private copying levy, introduce a voluntary private sharing levy, and get rid of the constant threats of lawsuits.ary private sharing levy, and get rid of the constant threats of lawsuits.

"This is nonsense - the Supreme Court has actually focused on the need for balance in copyright"

The need for balance is also nonsense.

The idea of copyright and patents, as incentives, were conceived for the good of the people as a whole, not for the good of artists or inventors. "Balance" is not part of the equation.

The idea of having a military force is to have protection for the people. "Balance" is not part of the equation. Go to a country where the military has requested and obtained or simply grabbed the same force (balance) as the people and you have a military dictatorship.

And speaking of "balance" why not limit television programs so that the radio industry is allowed to "balance" out with television, have the same profits?

And what about balance bween the cartels and the artists? Why not pass a "balance" law that says that artists shall keep 50 percent of all the profits made by the phonograph companies and movie studies. The other 50 percent would go to the shareholders. That would be real justice in "balance". It would help establish a 3 way balance between the people, the crators and the so called owners, which are frequently just plan grabbers of copyrights.

Why is "balance" loved so much?
It is a nonsense concept/message pushed by the copyright cartel. I sounds nice, fair, reasonable, just, when in fact the concept of "balance" has none of that. Historically "balance" of rights have never played any role. The strongest always got what they wanted, be it land, men, money, art, whatever, either through laws or through force.

Actually no one has shown that the idea of an incentive actually works in a positive or negative manner, no matter how the interests are "balanced".

For copyrights and patents there is actually no research to such questions as:

- How does the present incentive work?
- Who gets the benefits of the incentives?
- Does the incentive actually work?
- What are the alternatives to promote creation?
- What is the optimum (for the people) level of incentive?

It is time to stop legislating as a response to pressure groups and based on anectdotal evidence. Do real scientific research before making the "balance" decisions.
