Goodbye Sam Bulte

p2p news / p2pnet: Peggy Nash (left) – 20,690 / Sam Bulte – 18,489.

And that says it all, for Canada at least.

Yesterday saw the Liberals tossed out and the Conservatives eased in as Canada’s latest election closed with another minority government slated to take power.

The elections also saw the NDP’s Peggy Nash trounce entertainment cartel hopeful Hollywood Sam Bulte, a Liberal with designs on taking the Parkdale-High Park riding – with a little help from her friends in show biz.

Bulte was selected by the movie and music industries to represent them in the new parliament. But thanks largely to the Net and bloggers, with Ottawa law professor Michael Geist to the fore, Canadians clearly showed they didn’t want another vested interest candidate in Ottawa.

Cartel favourite Liza Frulla, the Liberal heritage minister, also lost her seat. She’s replaced by the Bloc’s Thierry St-Cyr.

Not at all incidentally, Geist suggests it’s time for all Canadian MPs to take the pledge – the Copyright Pledge.

No Member of Parliament who has accepted financial contributions or other benefits from (i) a copyright lobby group, (ii) its corporate members, or (iii) senior executives as well as (iv) a copyright collective shall serve as Minister of Canadian Heritage or as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Canadian Heritage, nor sit on any legislative committee (parliamentary or standing committees) conducting hearings or deliberations on copyright matters.

One Response to “Goodbye Sam Bulte”

  1. Reader's Write Says:

All that record company money flushed down the toilet, what a shame. I wonder if they will add her campaign contributions to the next set of bogus figures on how much money they have lost to piracy.

This is a great victory indeed for the copyright cause in Canada. Lets just hope that Peggy Nash does not start inviting the recording industry to dinner come next election.

  2. Reader's Write Says:

Congratulations to all of those who dilligently toiled to achieve their goal of (partially, at least) muting the influence the Creative Cartels have in Canada.

Beyond the specific achievements, you have also demonstrated how the ‘net can be employed in order to effect political change. I’d like to think of it as a “Glass Roots Movement” (refering to the fibreglass strands that are used in fibre-optic cabling capable of carry large amounts of high-bandwidth data.)

It will be interesting watch what develops in the wake of Monday’s election, mainly in terms of what, if any, attempts the control-freak bureaucrats and politicians in the (so-called) free world make to reign in this type of activity on the internet because they find it extremely threatening to their entrenched fifedoms and empires, as well as their beloved status quo.

    Ha Ha.

  4. Reader's Write Says:

its great that she did not get relected. However I feel its unfortunate that the conservitives got in. I believe that steve harper wants to turn Canada into America version 2. The consertives love big corparations(CRIA) they go together like bread and butter. So I wonder if the conservitives are going to be worse for p2p.

  5. Reader's Write Says:

    The Conservatives are in power.

Even if Sam Bulte had been re-elected, it would have meant nothing, as she was a Liberal. She would have been the Heritage critic in the opposition, nothing more.

As things stand, the heritage critic for the Conservatives, Bev Oda, WAS elected, and might just become the next Heritage Minister.

So in essence, that Sam Bulte is gone doesn’t change a thing, and you are all happy about nothing.

You really need to learn more about politics. Bev Oda is the threat, Bulte wasn’t one, she would have had no power, aside from the ability to contradict and critique the opposing Heritage minister.

  6. Reader's Write Says:

Steven harper is not what the Liberals make you think he is.

    Get Realistic.

I spoke to James Rajotte (Industry Critic) a few times, once when he was in the Alliance, and the other during the election campaign, he said that they wouldn’t even try to pass a new copyright law.

  7. Reader's Write Says:

If you seriously think that the pro-user lobby showing they have the power to get a politician defeated in an election means nothing, then you should not be telling anyone here that “You really need to learn more about politics.”

  8. Reader's Write Says:

Yes, she is gone, but please maintain a sense of dignity and decorum by not skipping about whilst singing “Ding Dong! The witch is dead…..”

  9. Reader's Write Says:

    Like that will change anything.

Bev Oda also received plenty of money from the media cartels. It will work just as well!

  10. Reader's Write Says:

    Like that will change anything.

Bev Oda also received plenty of money from the media cartels. It will work just as well!

  11. Reader's Write Says:

Did you read what I said?

The companies had funded BOTH Bulte and Bev Oda.

Bev Oda WAS elected. Bulte was not. The Conservatives are in power. The Liberals are OUT. Bulte was a Liberal. She would have been useless even if she had kept her seat. It makes no difference.

Bev Oda received just as much from the companies. If it was a pro-user lobby that got Bulte defeated (which is strongly disputable), it really failed in making sure that Oda would not be elected either.

As it stands, this was a useless move. It’s Oda that turns out to be the threat. Oda is in power.

Yes, you still need to learn more about politics.

  12. Reader's Write Says:

I can never be sure if all this “internet press” played a part in the demise of Sam, but I am certain it played a role in my decision to not vote liberal in my own riding.

  13. Reader's Write Says:

Uh, Bev Oda at least MET with the users’ delegation. Bulte scoffed. Bev also has experience as a teacher. I believe she is a much more reasonable person than Bulte / Frulla, and thank god those two are gone.

  14. Reader's Write Says:

Yeah, really. Peoples’ perceptions of the Conservatives stem solely from Liberal propaganda. Even I recognize this, and I’m a member of the NDP.

Give them a chance to prove themselves before you declare them the greatest thing for Bush since an apathetic electorate.

  15. Reader's Write Says:

Different cartels, with different agendas. Bell et all spread their money around pretty evenly…

  16. Reader's Write Says:

I am aware of who won, who lost and who took who’s money, and yes it is disputable how much the press coverage contributed to her downfall (I do not think it is just a coincidence that Bulte was one of only 2 liberals to lose their seats in Toronto) but if Bulte had won reelection after the whole scandal, it would have sent a clear message to any politician (including oda) that you can pass whatever copyright reforms you want because the public does not care about this issue. She would not have been the heritage minister, but the message her reelection would send would be almost as devastating to the cause as if she was.

“If it was a pro-user lobby that got Bulte defeated (which is strongly disputable), it really failed in making sure that Oda would not be elected either. “

It was Bulte that was targeted, not Oda. From what little I have read about Bev Oda, there seems to be a little more hope with her and the conservatives then there was with Sam Bulte. Even if she does turn out to be another recording industry puppet, at least she might think twice before passing bogus copyright reforms when she has a tight race for reelection coming up.

  17. Reader's Write Says:

You morons who voted NDP got the CONSERVATIVE GOVERNMENT YOU DESERVE!

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
