p2p news / p2pnet: The cell phones of Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis, five cabinet members and top officials have been secretly tapped for about a year, says the Greek government.
Illegal software at Greece’s second biggest mobile phone operator, Vodafone Greece, allowed calls to and from about the prime minister’s, the defense ministry and the public order ministry, "some foreign ministry phones, one former minister, now in opposition, and others," said government spokesman Theodore Roussopoulos, quoted in a Reuters story.
A judicial investigation will also look into possible charges of espionage, said Roussopoulos.
"Socialist opposition politicians, including former defense minister Yannos Papandoniou, whose phone was among those tapped, reacted angrily and demanded a full investigation."
Most of the tappings took place around the August 2004 Athens games, the most guarded Olympics in history with 1.2 billion euros ($1.45 billion) invested in security, Justice Minister Anastasios Papaligouras said, adds Reuters.

They are going to lose a lot of customers after this. Everybody hates Vodafone now here.
A serious fact that is not mentioned:
The top technician who was in charge of security in the system, commited suicide the day after they found out about it (who believes they didn’t know?)
Major investigation is going on about that too.
