Karl Marx as a joke, hardly anything he wrote has any value anymore. If ever did.

Chile side with Castro`s government??? Hahaha!!! what an ignorant statement.

Socialism has already failed in Latin America (and the rest of the world for that matter), free markets, respect for private property and individual rights are the way of modern republics like Chile. Actually in Chile we are rank number 8º in economic freedom, not bad.
Even chilean socialists do not support marxism anymore and you cant blame them.

"The vast majority of Cubans recognise the gains of the revolution"

But we will never know that for sure until the corrupt socialist government of Cuba allows free election, wake up.

The CSSR was in no way a good example. Just have a look at the Prague Spring. That was actually the only time in the history of the CSSR, where a bit of freedom was guaranteed. I myself believe in a struggle of classes as well (it's hard not to do living in this world) and dislike capitalism but I'm not a communist (although I used to). Reading Marx shows several weak points of the communist ideology. Marx is very good in analysing the situation, but not in showing up ways out of the problems. If a revolution has the aim of passing power from one class to the other, there is still a supressed class (although it's the smaller one). Furthermore many communists have this idea of the 'revolutionary avant-garde' as for example the German Read Army Fraction which automatically leads to new leading classes (because the leaders of the revolution, the 'avant-garde' take power in the upcoming new system as well). Many leftist thinkers dealt with this problem and some came to a quite rational and intelligent solution: anarchism. This theory is against any form of rule and is not, as usually said a state of chaos. (as further lecture: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anarchism; pay attention to the external links...) Therefore it's a much better system than communism because it's simply further developed.

I'm not disagreeing with how communism is being defined here, but I do have a question.

Have there been any notable instances of a successful Marxist/Leninist "style" communist government/country in the real world?

IMHO pre Stalin Russia does not qualify as a successful example, but then I'm not much of a historian.

Every word that Gianniotis (fellow greek?) posted above is correct. I've discussing with many North Americans about that and very few get it. Communism is not what you think. I am a communist too. I voted for the greek communist party once. I don't like the current leadership and I won't do it in the next elections.
China is not communist. Perhaps they are more of a Stalin type communism but not like Lenin or Marx imagined it.
