Get Dell, get Google

p2p news / p2pnet: Chances are that soon, when you buy a Dell computer, you’ll also get Google.

Like it or not.

"Google has confirmed that they are testing preinstalled Google software on Dell machines that let Dell users search their computers for local information," says theunofficialgoogleweblog.

Exactly what Google software will be installed on Dell machines?

There are no confirmed details, says the item, but, "judging from the push lately you can almost be certain that it is the Google Pack. The Google pack includes Google Earth, Google Desktop, Picasa, Google Talk, Mozilla Firefox, Norton Antivirus, and Adobe Reader 7."

What? No Microsoft? ; )

According to search expert Gary Stein, "Google’s move onto desktop will likely unsettle Microsoft, which is still trying to gain market share in search," says Online Media Daily.

"They’re seeing Google seep into more and more cracks in the computing landscape. Google’s mission isn’t to organize the world’s information, it’s to organize your access to the world’s information, and that’s a threat to Microsoft," he said.

Google’s providing free software on Dell PCs to drive consumers, "to their already monetized properties," the story has Stein saying. "They’re not monetized properties, they’re properties with the opportunity to monetize," he said. "Under that scenario, you have to generate as much traffic as possible."

Google’s been advertising this for a while now. Offering a download of Firefox with the Google toolbar pre-installed. (Not just the regular FF search bar, but a whole separate toolbar like the old IE one.)
