Halo 2 – only on Vista
p2p news / p2pnet: Disaster for followers of Microsoft’s Halo 2 video game.
Bill and the Boyz have ruled it’ll only work on the new Windows version Vista, Longhorn that was!
“The decision could make it expensive for many to play the game if they have to buy the new version of Windows and extra hardware for their PC,” the BBC points out, going on:
“Deciding to make the best-selling Halo 2 Xbox game a Vista-only title is likely driven by Microsoft’s desire to get people upgrading to the new version of the Windows.”
Really?
Vista is expected out sometime this year but considering the endless delays so far, who knows? Meanwhile, “Microsoft has made big changes to the way it handles graphics,” says the Beeb.
“Unlike other versions of Windows, it will need an advanced video card to get the most out of it. It is also likely to demand a lot of computer memory and a sizeable hard drive. While these requirements are likely to be met by dedicated players who want to get the most out of games, many less keen players could struggle to comply.”

Most PC gaming enthusiests wont touch Halo* with a 10 foot pole anyhow so who is Microsoft trying to prove?
Halo* on the PC is a stale “been there done that” type of thing. On a console however it was a revolutionary new thing for people who have never played PC games before.

Give it a month and someone will release their own version for xp, its just another childish attempt by microshite to force you to upgrade to a drm laced OS which no one in their right minds would touch, as far as i am concerned the only system i would use after xp would be linux based , never will touch MS again

That’s what I’m thinking also.

I apologize in advance for my cynasism, but how exactly does this differ from the rest of the bloated windoze monstrosities M$ produces already?
If you absolutely want to run M$ games then i suggest you get a linux distro then install wine. Wine is an implementation of the Win32 API layer which allows PE executables to run on linux. I stress that this is not emulated. Infact some programs/games even run faster using wine than on M$.
So if you must play halo2 use linux, atleast that way you don’t have to buy and install M$ windoze.

I really don’t understand what exactly is so graphically demanding in windows vista. Im running a skin that emulates the vista style (transparent window borders, shadows, etc.) on my dell 700m with Intel extreme graphics 2(very bad). Sounds like either the programers over at M$ are either really bad at this or are just trying to force people to upgrade their video cards. In any case, this may be the straw that forces people over to linux.

What they are trying not to say, is that Halo 2 will only run on Vista and you need newer cards, not because of the requirements of the program but rather the requirements of the OS and it’s DRM coupling requirements.
I won’t buy Vista. I won’t buy the required upgrades in equipment till what I have just literally will not work anymore. Till then, Microsucks can keep their upgrade and their equipment.
I already run Linux on one computer and am happy with it for surfing. It has again returned me the pleasure of surfing without the hassels of driveby installs from nefarious websites.
I am not planning on keeping up with the Jones, I’m not going to pay for new just because it is needed to run the latest greatest. It is neither worth the cost nor the problems that come with dealing with DRM to do so. Just like I have finally stopped all purchases of music and media because of the DRM and the sue’em all are not what I agree with. I spend my money as I choose. I won’t spend it on what I don’t believe in. They can like that or lump it, doesn’t change a thing. The only part that will return me to buying will be the dropping of such lock in schemes. In the end, it’s my choice what I pull money out of my pocket for, this isn’t one of them.

The only time i’ve ever installed an OS just to play one game was win95 for Diablo. Diablo was worth it. A crappy port of a crappy console fps? Yeah right.
Sounds like Stevie the Chair has outsourced his brain.

When they mentioned that you would need to upgrade to a more advanced graphics card for Vista they didn’t mean that you would need to for the GUI (graphics User Interface) they ment for playing games and stuff.
