S Korea vs Hollywood

p2p news / p2pnet: South Korean film makers, infuriated by Hollywood’s attempt to dominate the local movie industry through what’s being called a ‘cultural invasion,’ have moved their protests up a significant notch.

Backed by US trade representative Rob Portman, the major studios are trying to force through a ruling under which the South Korean government would slash its South Korean movie quota to allow in more Hollywood ‘product’.

Korean movies must currently be shown for 146 days per year on each screen, or 40% of the year, but that’ll be halved if Hollywood gets it way.

Now, “Top South Korean filmmakers, angered by their government’s decision that effectively doubles the number Hollywood films allowed to be shown in the country, are planning demonstrations half a world away – at the Berlin International Film Festival,” says IMDb, quoting Daily Variety.

It goes on, “The trade paper said that famed director Chan-wook Park (right), who has been scheduled to lecture at the festival’s Talent Campus, plans to voice his opposition to the government’s action during the festival. He is expected to be joined by the country’s top actor, Dong-gun Jang, who is scheduled to arrive in Berlin to promote Chinese director Kaige Chen’s The Promise, in which he stars.”

    —Hollywood are like the mafia—

Sadly, the entertainment cartels _aren’t_ like the Mafia. Organized Crime can be dealt with. The major studios and record labels, however, do whatever the hell they want not only with impunity, but also with the active and enthusastic help of various governments, under deep and heavy pressure from the US administration.

    Cheers!

The Mafia has morals. They kill you when they have a beef with you. The RIAA/MPAA sue Grandmothers. The Mafia has respect for their elders & don’t go after kids or the aged. The Mafia is also more loyal to their clients.
