We need help, says FBI
p2p news / p2pnet: A hint that computer crime may be a going concern has come from no less a person than the director of the FBI.
With the Cheney / Bush administration pumping the likes of Yahoo and Google for confidential data on users, not to mention secretly spying on them, private businesses are now being asked to become Deputy Dawgs – amateur FBI agents.
Or put another way, “The FBI needs more help from private businesses to stay ahead of the curve in the fight on cybercrime,” FBI director Robert Mueller told people attending the RSA Conference in San Jose, Calfornia, yesterday, says CNET News. “We recognize that in certain areas we lack the expertise that you possess,” he said. “We lack the specific knowledge of threats that affect individual businesses every day.”
Through public and private alliances, “we are moving from rhetoric to reality and improving our ability to confront criminal and terrorist threats to our national infrastructure,” he stated but, he admitted, “there has been some apprehension in working with law enforcement, especially when it comes to reporting cybercrime.”
Moreover, “Most companies suffering computer intrusions or breaches of security do not report the incidents to law enforcement,” Mueller said.
But the FBI was conscious of fears of negative publicity or the loss of a competitive advantage and, “We certainly do not want you to be victimized a second time by our investigation,” Mueller added.

Yes, the FBI does need more “Deputy Dawgs” because when it comes to technology, they are more like Muskie’s pal Vincent, the mole with extremely poor eyesight. The FBI has NOT made the necessary investments in Information Technology infrastructure for the agency and also Information Technology training for Special Agents and Staff Specialists.
It’s one thing to encourage businesses to report criminal activity directed at them and take an active role in resolving such matters. Anything beyond that is going to start looking very much like the ill-conceived and discredited ‘TIPS’ program that got rolled out shortly after 9/11 and a few weeks later, tossed in the dumpster when it became widely regarded as a “spy on your neighbors and customers” program.
