p2p news / p2pnet: A Canadian university has ruled against Wi-Fi on the campus because administrators are worried about possible hazards to student health.
Lakehead is located at the head of Lake Superior in Thunder Bay, Ontario, and president Fred Gilbert won’t allow Wi-Fi, "until he’s satisfied EMF (electric and magnetic fields) exposure doesn’t pose a health risk, particularly to young people," says ITBusiness.ca.
The story has Gilbert saying he based his decision on scientific literature that indicates the potential for "some fairly significant" health consequences.
"These are particularly relevant in younger people (who have) fast-growing tissues, and most of our student body are late teenagers and still growing, so it’s just a matter of taking precautions and providing an environment that doesn’t have a potential risk associated risk," he said.
In addition, Canadian regulation allows for a higher minimum degree of exposure to EMFs than do some other countries, he states, adding, according to ITBusiness.ca:
"All I’m saying is while the jury’s out on this one, I’m not going to put in place what is potential chronic exposure for our students. Admittedly that’s highest around the locations of the antenna sites and the wireless hotspots, but those are the places people tend to gravitate to because they get the best reception."

Now i actually live in thunder bay and my dad’s a proffessor at the univercity and even he thinks its retarded. They just started having internet courses taught there and they keep crashing and shit cause of faulty programming. Also alot of classes who use internet are being put at a huge disadvantage. The president is what most refer to as an idiot. He turned down basically 120 000 dollars from 2 profs trying to get time off to work on a project that they require to travel for 3 years for and recieved the biggest grant any proffessor at lakehead ever got in the social science department. He also plays hockey and starts alot of fights.
Point is when your “scientific facts” are written by stupid people who probably didn’t prove it properly you put students at a disadvantage

Yeah, Fred Gilbert is quite possibly the most despised person in the Thunder Bay education system - hell, maybe even Ontario.
And not just because of this, this is minimal to the kind of shit he tries to pull without getting any input from the student body, faculty, or even City Hall.

maybe he should leave the physics and health of em waves to the physics and medical profession instead of just making things up off the top of his head.
all matter emits em waves at different frequencies…just because some frequencies may be bad for the human body, doesn’t mean they all are.

Finally, a school administrator who actually cares about their students! Fred Gilbert is 100% on the money. There’s plenty of internet access currently available to the students at Lakeland and this Wi-fi decision does not affect the quality of education at Lakeland in *any way*. I challenge anyone to prove otherwise. If the quality of education is not your focus then you’ve been watching too much TV, this is a school we’re talking about here. Not a mall, not a Starbucks, not an airport . A school.
Fred Gilbert is protecting our children from a potential risk. I only wish school admins had been this diligent back when Coca-Cola was packing our grade schools full of Coke machines.
Looking back in retrospect 20 years from now Fred Gilbert will be seen as a hero. The risks from Wi-fi are woefully understudied and understated. The studies which do exist are primarily industry shills. Three cheers for Fred Gilbert, thanks for doing the right thing Fred! It’s a lonely road when you do the right thing, and I have nothing but respect for the person who knows that and does it anyhow.

Wow - it’s amazing that an educational establishment can missappropriate science so badly. WiFi transmits at less than one-quarter of a watt of power. This is infintessimally small compared to a cell-phone and you hold that to your head!
You get more EMF radiation from the back of a TV, a leaking microwave, or a power transformer.
Such an education policy belongs to the dark ages and alchemy. Quick, turn off the power to the school, the EMF is killing our children.
