p2p news / p2pnet: Canada’s Research In Motion (RIM) will probably be told to, “halt most of its US BlackBerry e-mail service after a judge hears arguments today on a proposed shutdown,” forecasts Bloomberg News.
NTP is levelling patent infringement claims against RIM and wants its BlackBerry service suspended across America until the dispute is settled.
The company, based in Waterloo, Ontario, would, “write a cheque to remove the threat of a ban,” says the Globe and Mail, “but only without strings attached.
“Jim Balsillie, RIM’s chairman and co-chief executive officer, says the company will not settle a patent infringement suit with NTP Inc if the deal would hamstring future operations and limit RIM’s ability to do business with its partners,” says the story.
“It wasn’t about money,” he’s quoted as saying. “They [NTP] wouldn’t give us the terms we needed to carry on our business.”
US district judge James R. Spencer can today, “make his ruling today in Richmond, Virginia, or delay an opinion,” says Bloomberg.
