BlackBerry US stays online
p2p news / p2pnet: Predictions that Research In Motion’s (RIM) US BlackBery service would be closed while legal issues are resolved have proved to be unfounded.
"Earlier this month, the US government asked a federal judge to hold off from a possible shutdown of the Blackberry service, because of the system’s popularity among key government employees," says the BBC
Instead, the Canadian company has won a stay of execution in the case where technology firm NTP is claiming patent infringement.
Judge James Spencer, "said that RIM had infringed NTP’s patents and that he would rule on an injunction as ’soon as reasonably possible’," .
RIM chairman and ceo Jim Balsillie has said he was willng to, "write a cheque to remove the threat of a ban," but, "only without strings attached".
The fight dates back to 2002, when patent-holding company NTP successfully sued RIM in a lower court, adds the BBC.
