Winny military data leak
p2p news / p2pnet: Confidential information from Japan’s Maritime Self-Defense Force has been leaked via the Winny p2p application, says the Japan Times.
Quoting the SDF, the leak revealed personal data on, “dozens of MSDF members, cipher-related documents, and documents on the planning of combat exercises, the MSDF said,” according to the story, which goes on:
“The information is believed to have come from a personal computer owned by a chief petty officer in charge of communications on the destroyer Asayuki, which is deployed to the MSDF’s base in Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture.”
The MSDF is trying to find out why, and how, the data wound up in the cpo’s PC, “which he took onboard the destroyer without permission,” says the Japan Times, adding:
“The computer was apparently infected with a virus that causes information disclosure from an infected computer using the file-sharing software Winny when the crew member was entering the data on the computer.”
Winny, which features Freenet code and includes anonymous file-sharing, became known in the west when the Big Four record labels’ first Japanese victims were found to have been using it.
