Google versus eBay

p2p news / p2pnet: In what it calls an update on payments, Google has given a partial explanation of how it plans to out eBay eBay.

"There’s been a lot of interest and speculation about what Google is doing with payments," post Benjamin Ling, product manager, and Tom Oliveri, product marketing manager, on the company’s blog, going on that, "online billing and payments have been a core part of our offerings for some time".

Ling says to run its advertising programs, "Google receives payments every day from advertisers, and then pays out a portion of those funds to advertising partners".

Unless its advertising partners are among what appears to be a large, and growing, number of smaller sites, such as p2pnet, of course. In that case, ‘Do No Evil’ Google uses spurious ‘false click’ claims to cop out of paying what it owes.

Be that as it may, "Over the past four years, Google has billed advertisers in 65 countries more than $11.2 billion in 48 currencies, and made payments to advertising partners of more than $3.9 billion," it says. "When one of our consumer services requires payment to us, we’ve also provided users a purchase option.

"As the number of Google services has increased, we’ve continued to build on our core payment features and migrate to a standard process for people to buy our services with a Google Account. Examples of this migration include enabling users to buy Google Video content, Google Earth licenses, and Google Store items with their Google Accounts. We also just began offering similar functionality on Google Base.

"Looking ahead, we want to continue building payment services that meet the needs of Google users and advertisers. We expect to add payment functionality to Google services where our users need a way to buy online. For us, it’s all about bringing our users a better online experience whether they’re searching or buying."

That’s one way of putting it ; p

One Response to “Google versus eBay”

  1. Reader's Write Says:

Payment is just one of the components Google is setting up to rival eBay.

    Advertising - Adwords/Adsense
    Froggle -finding products and pricing
Google Talk and Blogger - communicating with customers
Maps - locate your customers locally
    and Payment for the transactions.

Eventually, the new Google Pages will be the glue to all these components. People who want to make money and have something to sell, will be able to set up an instant store by dragging and dropping advertising, blog, pictures (google image search), Payment etc. This is google’s grand plan to expand the market for many of it’s product on the expense of eBay and Amazon.
