NBC Universal snaps up iVillage
p2p news / p2pnet: NBC Universal says it’s buying iVillage for $600 million.
Last summer Murdoch’s News Corp bought Intermix Media and with it, MySpace.com, a teen destination for $580 million, and Viacom acquired Neopet, which zeroes in on kids to get to their parents.
Now NBC Universal is spending the $600 million, “to get in touch with its inner woman,” as the Los Angeles Times puts it.
iVillage explores such themes as health, beauty, dieting, pregnancy, sex and parenting and is a, “very advertiser-friendly property,” NBC Universal chairman Bob Wright says, according to the LA Times.
“He said the site was attractive because it had a dedicated fan base of about 14 million users a month and was profitable.”
NBC Universal Television Group chief executive Jeff Zucker, “didn’t rule out creating an IVillage-branded cable channel,” says the story, adding, “Some analysts believe that there may soon be IVillage-branded TV shows.”
iVillage also runs Astrology.com, GardenWeb.com and GURL.com for teenage girls.
That just leaves a male-oriented site to round things off. What’ll it be and who’ll be the buyer?
