MySpace safe, says ceo

p2p news / p2pnet: Police in a Connecticut city suspect up to seven girls have been assaulted by men they met on Rupert Murdoch’s MySpace.

But it’s as safe as, "anyplace in the offline world despite recent reports that sexual predators may be using it to find and lure young victims, the company’s CEO said," according to the Associated Press.

“If you go to the mall and start talking to strange people, bad things can happen,” Chris DeWolfe, the site’s co-founder, said in a telephone interview. “You’ve got to take the same precautions on the Internet.”

However, "Last week, two men were arrested in what prosecutors said were the first federal sex charges involving MySpace," the story continues.

Children under 14 aren’t allowed on MySpace and 14-year-olds are allowed only restricted access, AP has DeWolfe stressing.

And he said the site, "uses a computer program that analyzes user profiles and flags members likely to be under 14. More than 200,000 users have been deleted, he said. But children regularly lie about their age to get around those restrictions.”

DeWolfe said MySpace had assisted on more than 2,400 investigations, “from criminal cases to runaways, and make themselves available to investigators around the clock,” adds AP.

Parents need to realise that surfing the net is like physically travelling the world. You need to avoid bad neighbourhoods, trouble spots, war zones etc. The problem is that too many parents are using the pc as an unpaid nanny and simply not thinking about what’s going on behind closed doors.

As far as i’m concerned if you’re too lazy to teach your kids to avoid the troublespots on the net and/or provide any supervision while the kids are on the net, then anything that happens to your kids is YOUR fault. So don’t bother suing anyone else if your kids get stalked or whatever.

It’s time a lot more parents out there, realised they are adults and started acting like it.

I’ll have to agree with you, but I also have say a 13 yr old should still have some common sense. While most people generally lie about things on the net, that aside, a 13 yr old should know to excercise caution when meeting people from the net they may think they know simply by reading a few messages. The person below simply commented that the site sucks. What he doesn’t know is that MySpace, however addicting or ridiculous it might seem to meet people on the net, have helped in cases of kidnappings, connected old friends, and probably family members if you ask me. I can say for a fact that the phrase “everyone AND their MOTHER is on MySpace” is wholeheartedly fact.

Caution is the word of the day to these kids that believe they’re grown.

In my Point of view a 13 year old should be under Parental supervision on my Space or anywhere else on the Internet……I myself am a member on My Space and yes i had Minors even hit on me(an 11 year old at that). Where are the Parents? My Space should not be held responsible for tha action a 13 year old takes its the Parents. Many might get upset at me for Posting this but hey i say it as i see it. PARENTS do your Part as a parent thats all there is to it by law they shouldnt even be left alone at that age let alone go to a Party….
