Google Gmail woes
p2p news / p2pnet: "I’m a regular reader of Google Blogoscoped, and yesterday, I experienced a huge shock with regards to my GMail account," posts Bob.
Huge shock?
What Bob means is when he tried to check his Gmail account, "We’re sorry, but Gmail is temporarily unavailable. We’re currently working to fix the problem - please try logging in to your account in a few minutes," was the response.
"Fine, I thought," Bob continues on Blogoscoped, "just a small hiccup which the Google folks are working on. Over the next couple of hours I attempted to login every 15 minutes or so but to no avail. By then it was past midnight and I needed to catch up on some sleep, so I decided to head to bed and hoped that things would be resolved by the next morning (i.e. today)."
But when he woke up, he, “sensed that something was terribly wrong, as the Google folks rarely took > 12 hours to fix such a problem. I accessed the Google Accounts page (www.google.com/accounts/), and saw the following message:
"The account you attempted to access has been deleted. You may click here to sign up for a new account."
Bob wondered if it was a nightmare come true. He says he tried logging into his Google account via www.google.com/accounts/Login, but got an invalid username/password error.
"I tried to reset my password, and my suspicions were confirmed when I saw the following," he states.
"There are no accounts in our system with the E-mail address usermame[put at-character here]gmail.com which you entered."
Now Bob wants to know if his Google account really has been deleted.
"I use it religiously and it is my primary email account," he explains. "I have over 300mb of CRUCIAL data in my email, none of which I have backups for.
"I tried to send an email to my GMail account from another email account, but the email bounced.
"Any ideas as to what I should do? This is an emergency for me. :/"
(Thanks, DaBlade)

hahahah my gmail account is down as we speak :P.
I love gmail, but recently its not been so reliable

No backup = bad. We all know the drill. Depending on and then bitching about a FREE service is kinda silly. You want something important, yet are not willing to spend any money, time, or resources to assure its saftey. Sounds like disaster waiting to happen to me. OK, Google should not screw up like that, but it could have been hacked also, or maybe somone else has your password?

Yeah but if they offered a paid service - Id pay!
Is there any easy way to back up your gmail account?
Mine is also down now! ah!!
March 9th, 2006 at 12:29 am
Mine just dropped… seems like this problem is spreading. I love GMail but they need to work out these issues. These kind of bugs drive users away in droves. Features and space matter far less than reliable service.

i’m reading this thread because my email has been down and was wondering whether there was any problem with it.
backup–> pop your email locally (to your hd) using a pop3 software (thunderbird, eudora)

Although i’m not fussing over this, i’m just stating that my account has just gone down now as well - We’re sorry, but Google Mail is temporarily unavailable. We’re currently working to fix the problem — please try logging in to your account in a few minutes.
It’s a free service, it’s expected. I couldn’t access my hotmail account earlier today for a little while as the server was too busy, but Hotmail / MSN has way more downtime than gmail (imo)

I know the service is “free” to the user, however, it is us who bring them business and drive their stocks up high. If we all decide to boycott Gmail and any of their advertisers, they might be more inclined to fix the problems. It really is not free, it is paid for by advertising resulting from all of our bisiness. Let’s send a message.

I was here for the same reason and got a nasty shock to read somebody lost his account. I had no backup either. But my email is back now and I am going to take a backup tonight !!

Bob, did you try going to the Gmail help center and asking them to help?

I have my other email accounts forward to Gmail, and pick everything up from Gmail by POP3 access. When I send an email via SMTP from my desktop or laptop, I BCC it to Gmail. That way I have one copy of everything on Gmail, and a second copy of everything on my own PC, and even a third copy in the original mailboxes for a few days.
I see the error message that Gmail is temporarily unavailable fairly frequently. Nothing to get upset about. Of course they haven’t deleted my account yet!

I think there is a difference between not available and acount being deleted,we can live without hotmail, gmail for a day or two but being deleted without your consent, there is a big problem.I wish someone can contect google and post their answer of what realy happened and if this thing will happen in future.thanks

Innocent folks like me have been switching their loyalty to Google purely on the basis of hope that a competitive service will be available . It is disheartening to see that some thing we have placed our trust and held in high regard is starting to fail us.
I was trying to log in to Gmail the whole week in vain and it was the time I was expecting some critical mail from my prospective employers.
Nothing stop me from being ever faithful to Google despite the setbacks
