I read somewhere that using headphones that sit over your ears rather than the earbud versions can reduce - but not eliminate - the risks of damage to your hearing. Having suffered from a deterioration in my hearing after work in the construction and engineering industry, I have always made sure my kids know the dangers of loud music played through earphones. I know that tinnitus can have a major effect on a persons life, and no age group is really immune to this condition.

Okay, walkmans, radios and head sets have been around for ages. If you're playing your music at a high volume, you have yourself to blame. Otherwise, if you have to play it at a high volume to hear it, get your hearing tested.

"The point I'm making is that it is not live sound that causes hearing damage."

"Earphones do the most damage."

These comments are a bit misleading. Excessive sound pressure level at the eardrum over time is what does the damage regardless of it's source.

The point I'm making is that excessively loud "live sound" CAN cause hearing damage. Mr. Townshend's comments are probably accurate for most music fans, but to say that "it is not live sound that causes hearing damage." is just not true.
