These comments are a bit misleading. Excessive sound pressure level at the eardrum over time is what does the damage regardless of it's source.  

The point I'm making is that excessively loud "live sound" CAN cause hearing damage. Mr. Townshend's comments are probably accurate for most music fans, but to say that "it is not live sound that causes hearing damage." is just not true.
