Grey Album Grey Day looms
p2pnet.net News:- ‘So sue us,’ say 97 – so far – web page owners who have banded together to post the controversial (and illegal, according to EMI) DJ Dangermouse Grey Album on their sites in a February 24 protest organized by DownhillBattle.org.
Rolling Stone called the Grey Album “the ultimate remix record,” The New Yorker said it’s, “an ingenious hip-hop record that sounds oddly ahead of its time” and The Boston Globe described it as the, “most creatively captivating” album of the year.
But EMI claims it infringes The Beatles’ White Album and has been firing off “cease-and-desist” letters to anyone who carries the release, which was produced in a limited edition of 3,000.
The Grey Album was, and still is, an art project/experiment that uses the full vocal content of Jay-Z’s Black Album recorded over new beats and production, with the Beatles White Album as the sole source material.
“The major record labels have turned copyright law into a weapon, but participants in this action will be ignoring EMI’s threats and insisting on the public’s right to hear innovative new music,” says a DHB press release here, going on:
“EMI isn’t looking for compensation, they’re trying to ban a work of art. The record industry has become a huge drag on creativity and it’s only getting worse – it’s time to take a stand.”
With 97 sites promising to actually host the album and another 24 Going Grey on the Day, there’s more than 48 hours yet to go and it’s a certainty those numbers will be swelled by the February 24 deadline.
