CRAP to stay in iTunes
p2p news / p2pnet: France will not drop a clause from its new copyright legislation that would have forced Apple to take the CRAP out of iTunes.
CRAP means Cancellation, Restriction, and Punishment and it’s the latest acronym for DRM, which is itself corporate speak for Digital Rights Management, the no-win technology created to thwart fair use of music, movies and software.
Apple is a leading supporter of the concept and for a while it seemed France would adopt a law which would have compelled Apple to allow punters to download songs onto devices other than the iPod. But that’s not the case, says PC Pro.
A proposal to legalise p2p sharing in return for the payment of a monthly licence fee had already been dropped from the legislation, it states.
“Instead small fines have been introduced for anyone who uses p2p to download music for their own use, although the recording industry is less than happy about this as the money collected will go to the French treasury rather than its own pockets.
“The law will also provide for the establishment of a committee that will decide fair usage rights for digital media, such as the number of copies of a CD or DVD that can be made for the disc owner’s personal use.”
