p2p news / p2pnet: A Norwegian scientist has been awarded close to $1 million for discoveries which are now used in components essential to the development and manufacture of portable music players, among other things.
The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters (NASL) awarded the 2006 Abel (AH-bell) Prize, worth more than $900,000 and said to be the mathematics equivalent to the Nobel prize, to Lennart Carleson of Sweden’s Royal Institute of Technology.
“Carleson’s work has forever altered our view of analysis,” says the NASL. “Not only did he prove extremely hard theorems, but the methods he introduced to prove them have turned out to be as important as the theorems themselves.”
Carleson studied harmonic analysis and dynamical systems.
Harmonic analysis, “has applications to real world phenomena ranging from the firing of neurons in the brain to quantum computers, and is based on concepts students see in trigonometry,” says the award announcement. “Many phenomena, ranging from the vibrations of violin strings to the propagation of heat through a metal bar, can be viewed as sums of the simple wave patterns called sines and cosines.
“Such summations are now called Fourier series. One of Carleson’s many triumphs was settling a conjecture that had remained unsolved for over 150 years. He showed that every continuous function (one with a connected graph) is equal to the sum of its Fourier series except perhaps at some negligible points. (He actually proved a more general result, that a broader class of functions, called square-integrable, equal the sum of their Fourier series except perhaps at those points.)”
Dynamical Systems are, “mathematical models that seek to describe the behavior of large classes of phenomena, such as those observed in weather, financial markets, and many biological systems, from fluctuations in fish populations to epidemiology. Even the simplest dynamical systems can be surprisingly complex.
“With Michael Benedicks, Carleson studied a dynamical system first proposed in 1976 by the astronomer Michel Hénon, which exhibits the intricacies of weather dynamics and turbulence. This system was generally believed to have a so-called strange attractor, drawn in beautiful detail by computer graphics tools, but poorly understood mathematically. In a great tour de force, Benedicks and Carleson provided the first proof of the existence of this strange attractor in 1991, which has opened the way to a systematic study of this class of dynamical systems.”
“There are so many good people that could have been chosen, so I feel very lucky,” the BBC has Carleson saying.
The international Abel Committee, which decided the winner, said he’s, “always far ahead of the crowd. He concentrates on only the most difficult and deep problems,” according to the story. Once these are solved, he lets others invade the kingdom he has discovered, and he moves on to even wilder and more remote domains of science.”
“Not only has he solved a great unsolved problem, but he has created tools that we are now all using in our mathematics.”
Carelson will be presented with his prize by the king of Norway on May 23.

Note that in the second paragraph he works at *Sweden’s* Royal Institute of Technology ( http://www.kth.se/ ). Norway has been part of Sweden (which still wouldn’t make the first paragraph correct since it would still be Sweden, not Norway), but that was 100+ years ago.
In short: The prize is Norwegian and the prize is named after a Norwegian mathematician. But the current winner is not Norwegian. Ok?
