Much as we disklike unnecessary government regulation, our telecomms infrastructure is an important public resource. While a few areas have healthy competitive environments, many don't. It's too important to be left up to the commercial interests of the mega-corporations which control it. They will do what comes naturally - squeeze out the last drop of profits at whatever cost for the rest of society.
