Remix albums: what’s in a colour?
p2pnet.net Neat News:- Here’s a posting by Mark on the Hella Hip-Hop blog.
It about says it all.
Unofficial Hip Hop (work in progress)
Unofficial Unofficial Black Album Remix Albums Log:
- Paul Nice’s The Unofficial Black Album Remix
- Kno’s The White Album
- Kev Brown’s The Brown Album
- Bazooka Joe/RJD2’s The Silver Album
- Danger Mouse’s The Grey Album
- Beirut’s remix
- Amiri’s The Blackprint Album
- Cheap Cologne’s Jay-Z vs. Metalica - Double Black Album
- Illmind’s The Black & Tan Album
- DJ Lt. Dan’s The Black Remixes
- Kardinal and Solitaire’s The Black Jays Album
- 9th Wonder’s Black is Back
So what have we learned?
- Using Jay’s rhymes can make your bedroom production sound that much better.
- The original Black Album has awsome production.
- Just about every combination and parody of the album title has been overdone. (Paul Nice gets the award for best title for a Black Album remix album.)
- The style of self-promo not only works but really gets played out. Act fast or come hard.
- Upcoming emcees have "borrowed" beats for a long time. Borrowing verses works too. With caution.
- Sharing is caring.
- Jay is Jay.
And more unofficialness:
Alicia Key’s "You Don’t Know My Name" conversation. (On a side note, I actually do like Alicia’s classic R&B style, lengthy talk-over. I know she’s not Barry White, but for me that’s a good thing. I just pretend I’m on the other line and my spine tingles.)
