flickr on Newsweek cover

p2p news / p2pnet: Canada’s British Columbia is THE place.

It’s home to RIAA member Nettwerk, which is challenging the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) by paying court costs for a Texas family accused by the RIAA of copyright infringement.

It’s also home to p2pnet, which is doing the same by raising defense funds for a New York family that’s also on the RIAA hit list.

A Canadian court dealt the Big Four Organized Music cartel a blow from which it’s never recovered, and Ray Sutton, the Oldest Living Blogger, lives here.

There’s a lot more, and now two BC residents, Caterina Fake and Stewart Butterfield, are being splashed, this time by Newsweek.

You may not recognize their names, but you’ll recognize their creation.

flickr.

Unfortunately, from the perspective of Net openness, it was scarfed up by Yahoo, but that doesn’t detract from the fact the p2p photo application was conceived and developed here in British Columbia.

By, "building a 2.5 million-member community solely around a passion for sharing photos, flickr has become a poster child on how a well-executed Net effort can make big changes in people’s habits. Welcome to the new tech boom," says Newsweek.

Stay tuned ; )

One Response to “flickr on Newsweek cover”

  1. Reader's Write Says:

Actually according to Caterina Vancouver isn’t the place to be, San Francisco is.

“We were in Vancouver fer crissakes.”

PS: they don’t live here anymore, they moved south of the border to the land of megaservers and corporate IT meetings after the big buyout of 2005 to San Francisco. (as did a number of other flickr employees who worked in Vancouver)
