Linux desktop, with search
p2p news / p2pnet: Until recently, "any talk of a viable Linux desktop was scoffed at by many in the industry," says idm.net.au. "Martin Fink, VP of HP’s Linux wing and Barksdale Garbee, CTO of Open Source and Linux, told IDM at LinuxWold this year that ‘a general purpose Linux desktop is not likely in the near future’."
But now Novell has announced SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop, delivering a, "comprehensive desktop at a fraction of the cost of Microsoft offerings," the story has Novell saying.
"Designed for business users who have so far been reluctant to leave the Microsoft comfort zone, SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop features a fast and effective Graphical User Interface (GUI) and integrated desktop search.
That may be so but, "it varies considerably when it comes to features," says the story. "The most prominent of these is desktop search, which will return results from the entire system rather than just a single folder or application.
"For example, searching for contact by name will return results from email applications, word documents or wherever that search term is mentioned throughout the system."
Meanwhile, Novell may be, "passionately evangelising Linux and Open Office on the desktop," but more than half of its employees can nonetheless still use Microsoft Windows and Office, says ZDNet Australia.
Novell president Ron Hovsepian told Oz reporters, "about 2,000 employees right now out of 5,000 are single-boot only, which is Linux only, the rest are dual-boot."
But he said that a project to migrate the 3,000 dual-boot workers to open source is likely to be completed over the next year or so, adds the story.

for example find ~ -name ’something’ will search just your home dir, find is not gui but it provides crapload of useful option

I switched from XP Pro to Novell Suse 9.3 the last time (of countless) that Xp Pro crashed. Suse 9.3 knocks spots off Windows when it comes to reliability, time saved because anti-virus. anti-adware, anti-spyware etc. etc. don’t have to be used, time saved where it doesn’t need defragging and to add to that it’s considerably better than XP Pro at most tasks. Suse 10 was launched a while ago – so I’m not even using the most up to date.
It’s been about 6 months since I switched and I’ve now confidently consigned all my Windows disks to the dustbin where they belong and where they will stay. Linux allows you to concentrate on whatever you want to do, not a load of thankless, pointless tasks that keeps you pinned down to the Windows screen all the time.
I’m just glad that the majority are too misinformed by the Microsoft (in)propaganda machine to join the Linux community. That way they will keep the attentions of all the virus writers and all the other baddies to themselves!
