US leads Dirty Dozen of spammers
p2pnet.net News:- America leads the ‘dirty dozen’ top spam-producing countries, accounting for nearly 60% of the world’s electronic garbage.
So says a study from Sophos, a company whose business is “protecting businesses against spam and viruses”.
But although this huge volume of spam comes from American computers, a lot of it’s being sent without the owner’s knowledge and:
“Our intelligence suggests that a large amount of spam originates in Russia, even though it appears at only number 28 in the chart,” says Sophos.
“Hackers appear to be breaking into computers in other countries and sending out spam via ‘infected’ PCs,” states Sophos technology consultant Graham Cluley.
“Some Trojan horses and worms allow spammers to take over third-party computers belonging to innocent parties, and use them for sending spam. More than 30 percent of the world’s spam is sent from these compromised computers, underlining the need for a co-ordinated approach to spam and viruses.”
Using honeypots and other measuring systems, “Researchers scanned all spam messages received over two days last week and have revealed a ‘dirty dozen’ of offending countries with the United States topping the chart,” Sophos says here.
The ‘dirty dozen’ are:
- United States 56.74%
- Canada 6.80%
- China (& Hong Kong) 6.24%
- South Korea 5.77%
- Netherlands 2.13%
- Brazil 2.00%
- Germany 1.83%
- France 1.50%
- United Kingdom 1.31%
- Australia 1.21%
- Mexico 1.19%
- Spain 1.05%
Others 12.23%
“Spam is a global problem, and countries worldwide are starting to take the issue more seriously,” says Cluley. “However, legislation in the UK won’t protect users from spam coming from North America or China” …
… or, presumably, Canada, the second worst offender

America is NOT a country. It is two continents. The United States is a country.

Again, last time I checked Canada was part of North America.

What’s the essential difference here? In most cases, the spam that originates from Canada is from a US company that has crossed the border to shield themselves from US laws. Their presence in Canada should be rigorously investigated by the RCMP so that they will be forced to re-locate to their ‘native’ soil, to face penalties there. And as far as Europe is concerned, they see little difference in the geographical location of the US and Canada. To them, the ‘Americas’ are just that, North and South. Any idiot would know that, if they had any desire to know about the the world at large, instead of being a ’sock-puppet’ commentator, with isolationist tendencies.
