Sony drops PS2 price
p2p news / p2pnet: With PlayStation 3 ready for launch later in the year, Sony has dropped the price of its PS2 games console by about $20 in North America, making it $130.00.
Sony enters the battle for market share in next-generation hardware a year after Microsoft Corp, says MarketWatch.
Bill and the Boyz began selling Xbox 360 console in November and, “Although Xbox 360 shipments have been slower than expected, Microsoft maintains it is on track to meet a global distribution target of 4.5 million to 5.5 million units by the end of June”.
But, “PlayStation 2 is the most popular gaming platform in North America, Europe/PAL territories and Japan/Asia,” declares Sony. “To date, more than 101 million PlayStation 2 units and approximately one billion pieces of software for the PlayStation 2 have shipped worldwide.”
Expect a flood of online ads to back the price drop, starting on April 27.
For this year’s E3 in Los Angeles, “some industry watchers are expecting playable hardware with playable versions of games,” says MarketWatch, adding, “Similarly, Nintendo is expected to have a coming-out party for its own next-generation console at E3.”
